Il film racconta la vita del compositore Dmitri Šostakovič dal punto di vista di un regista  (interpretato da Armin Mueller-Stahl) che sta girando un film su Šostakovič . Nel 1961 la canzone "Into the Cold Dawn", scritta da Šostakovič per il film "Contro-piano", venne canticchiata da Yuri Gagarin durante il suo volo spaziale e divenne perciò la prima musica nello spazio.
